The tourist tax can quickly prove complicated for people who are not experienced. Here is a decryption in the form of questions/answers so that your declaration goes off without a hitch.

what is it and what is it for?

The tourist tax is a tax paid by the vacationer during their stay in holiday accommodation (hotel, campsite, furnished tourist accommodation, guest room, etc.). Legal obligation throughout France, the entire tax paid in a municipality goes entirely to its Town Hall. It allows municipalities to finance expenses linked to tourist attendance or the protection of their natural tourist areas for tourism purposes.

In the case of Bandol, the tourist tax collected is entirely donated to the tourist office. The main resource of our structure, it allows us to finance a team, to energize the city, to promote Bandol (press, website, social networks, etc.) and above all, to maintain a welcoming place open 7 days a week, all year round, for visitors from all walks of life.

How much is the tourist tax in Bandol?

For furnished tourist accommodation and guest rooms unclassified : the tax is 5% of the cost of the night, per person and per night, with a maximum of €4. This rate is then increased by 10% for the additional departmental tax (item L3333-1 of the General Code of Local Authorities) and 34% for the regional tax. These two taxes were imposed on municipalities in our region in 2023.

Example of calculation: 2 adults and 1 child stay in accommodation for 14 days for a total of €700.

  • 700 / 7 = €100 per night; €100 / 3 people = €33,33 = the price of the night per person.
  • €33,33 x 5% = €1,67 + (€1,67 x 10% departmental tax) + (€1,67 x 34% regional tax) = 1,67 + €0,17 + €0,57 = €2,41 = price of tourist tax per night and per person.
  • Finally, since the child is exempt from tourist tax, to calculate the total amount of tourist tax that you will have to pay you will need to calculate: €2,41 x 2 people x 14 days = €67,48.

For furnished tourist accommodation and guest rooms classified, the price per person per night is:

  • €1.15 for 1 star;
  • 1.30€ for 2 stars;
  • 2.16€ for 3 stars;
  • 3.25€ for 4 stars;
  • 3.83€ for 5 stars;
  • €5.76 for palaces.

Good to know : children under 18 are not subject to payment of tourist tax but must still be taken into account in its calculation.

Who pays the tourist tax?

The tourist tax is paid directly by the vacationer, with the owner. Then, it is up to the owner (or online platform) to remit the tourist tax to the municipality.

As an owner, to collect it you can: either request payment of the tax during your tenants' stay, or include the tax directly in your overall price. Example: if I estimate that my property is worth €600 per week, I can either make my vacationers pay €600 + the actual tourist tax, or tell myself that I am rounding my price to €650 in order to include the departure tax and facilitate exchanges with my tenant.

Anyway, once you cash it, you will have to declare it, then pay it.

how to declare my tourist tax in bandol?

when you have declared your rental property (registration number and change of use), you should have received connection details to our site a few days later www.bandol.taxesejour.fr. If this is not the case, contact Mélanie at bandol@taxesejour.fr.

This site is the official platform declaration and payment of tourist tax in Bandol. You will not be able to declare it anywhere other than on this site.

On the latter you will be able to:

  • connect to your space, with your password ;
  • to declare each month rentals made (number of people, number of nights, total price of the stay);
  • pay tourist tax online.

You have been warned! : the declaration must be made every month, regardless of whether you rented or not. In the latter case, you will only need to indicate 0 rentals, 0 people received and 0 € amount received.

Good to know : although the online platforms pay the tourist tax directly to the municipalities, the declaration remains a duty for the owner. So, every month, even if you only use Airbnb or any other platform, you must declare your tourist tax, mentioning “€0” for the amount. This way you won't pay tax twice.

How do I pay my tourist tax in Bandol?

On this same site, www.bandol.taxesejour.fr, you can pay online, by credit card, the tourist tax due. Attention, subtlety, if the tourist tax is declared monthly, its payment is made every three months. To see things more clearly, here is a summary of the deadlines:

Rental between 01/01 and 31/03Payment before 30/04
Rental between 01/04 and 30/06Payment before 31/07
Rental between 01/07 and 30/09Payment before 31/10
Rental between 01/10 and 31/12Payment before 31/01

You will only be able to pay when the reporting period is closed. It is therefore normal on August 1st not to be able to pay your July tourist tax. Payment will be possible from October 1st.

Good to know : the site www.bandol.taxesejour.fr sends automatic emails for any late payment. Also, if you have just paid and you still receive an email, it is simply because the payment has not yet been processed. Conversely, if you haven't paid yet, it will be time to do so!

What if I don't want to declare tourist tax?

Let us remember that the payment of the tourist tax is not a flower that an owner gives to his municipality, it is a legal obligation subject to sanctions. If you do not pay the tourist tax, you will be completely illegal, you risk checks and a fine of up to €2.

Furthermore, let's not forget what this tax is for: promoting the city and improving tourist infrastructure. Deciding to defraud, in addition to the offense committed, represents a considerable loss of income for Bandol. Who says less finances, says less promotion, says fewer vacationers, says less rentals, says less turnover for owners.
