On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Printemps des Potiers, now the Bandol Céramique Festival, the Alfred Kastler Media Library is highlighting Japanese know-how and its art of creating paper called Washi.

The exhibition presents a series of 22 comic strips which retrace the manufacturing process and uses of washi. Accompanied by two videos and numerous photos taken by the researchers, these plates allow us to get an intimate insight into the gestures of the actors.

This exhibition is the result of the meeting between the anthropologist of technology and nature Frédéric Joulian, the historian of craft trades Yuji Yonehara, and the collaboration with the cartoonist Itsu Horiguchi. It documents places and gestural know-how of traditional paper making in Japan, washi, and some of its uses by the best craftsmen in the Kyoto and Fukui region. It also combines various recording methods (mangas, photos, interviews, videos) in order to tell the scientific work in a different way.
