Getting to Château Val d'Arenc is almost an adventure ... Halfway between Le Plan du Castellet and Sainte-Anne d'Evenos, in the hollow of a valley, we discover Château Val d'Arenc, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and cypresses.
The name of Val d'Arenc is an echo of the Latin word arena which means sand. Sand quarries still in use are located below the Estate.
The vineyard has 26 hectares spread over several levels of terraces (names of the terraces specific to Bandol) on clay-limestone and sandstone soils. If the decor is dreamy, it remains difficult to cultivate. The slope is very steep, the erosion significant. Small stone walls keep the earth ... and the vines.
The grape variety of Val d'Arenc gives pride of place to Mourvèdre, the king of the Bandol appellation in red. The plants, 25 years old on average, occupy a dozen hectares. Originally from Spain, Mourvèdre is cultivated here at its northern limit: so much the better because it is under these conditions that the grape varieties give the best of themselves. Relatively difficult to drive, it requires a lot of sunlight. But then it offers deep, rich aromas and an amazing aging capacity.
The vineyard also has two other red grape varieties: 8 ha of Grenache and 4 of Cinsault. As for the white grape varieties, Clairette and Sauvignon, they share the remaining 2 ha.
