Today we are going to visit the town of Hyères, one of the oldest seaside resorts on the French Riviera. Hyères (a town of Art and History) has managed to preserve its monuments and historical sites, and all the charm of a Provençal village.

At 10:00 AM – We will begin a guided tour of Hyères, a medieval city through the centuries. Pass through the Massillon Gate and let yourself be transported back to the Middle Ages. As you wander through this maze of cobbled streets, our guide will tell you about life in the city during the age of knights.

We will discover the vestiges of the era, such as the Templar Tower, the Collegiate Church of Saint Paul and its important collection of ex-votos, as well as the remains of Fos Castle, from where we will enjoy an exceptional view of the city of Hyères, its harbor, and its islands. A fascinating visit during which we will uncover the mysteries and legends of this period.

Massillon Gate: A 2th-century gate that retains one of its two watchtowers from its original design. Formerly the harbor or saltworks gate, it was the main gate of the city.

The Templar Tower (Saint Blaise), built in the 13th century, served both religious and military purposes. The chapel on the ground floor consists of a single nave. The guardroom on the upper floor, with its arrow slits and fortified terrace, was accessible at the time only from the outside, using scaffolding.

The Collegiate Church of Saint Paul. Built in the 12th century in the Provençal Romanesque style, the church was given a Gothic nave in the 16th century, when it became a collegiate church. In 1842, it ceded its status as a parish church to the Church of Saint Louis. It houses one of the most important collections of ex-votos in Provence.

Around noon, we will have certainly earned our lunch. Our restaurant offers:
- Homemade smoked salmon toast with alder wood
- Fish fillet (depending on availability), citrus and herb sauce, pan-fried seasonal vegetables
- Gentle steamed chocolate almond cake with homemade vanilla whipped cream
- ¼ of wine and coffee.

At 14 p.m., after this meal, we will freely visit, at your own pace, a Museum of Cultures and Landscape that is not ordinary since it is in the former premises of the Bank of France.

Built in 1925, the Bank of France branch is a simple building consisting of a ground floor to receive the public, private apartments on the upper floor and a semi-underground basement used as a strong reserve (vault room).

This new museum in Hyères, inaugurated in 2021, presents collections of archaeology, painting and photography in permanent exhibition and a thematic temporary exhibition of Gustave Courbet.

Access to the museum garden with the entrance ticket.

After this enriching day, we will head back towards Bandol.
